Mark Cohen Forms Exploratory Committee for Independent House Bid in Nebraska’s 3rd District

LINCOLN, NE — Mark Cohen, a resident of Lemoyne, has initiated an exploratory committee to assess the feasibility of an independent candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives, targeting Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District in the upcoming 2026 midterms. Currently represented by U.S. Rep. Cohen, a former Air Force Judge Advocate and karate instructor, expressed his discontent with the polarized two-party system, emphasizing his belief that voters are being forced to choose between extremist candidates.

Cohen, who identifies as an independent after leaving the Democratic Party three years ago, critiqued the influence of urban policymakers on rural issues, particularly concerning firearms. He articulates a platform centered on responsible gun rights, the legalization and regulation of marijuana, and advocating for paper ballots in elections due to his apprehensions about electronic voting machines.

In contrast, Smith’s campaign highlights his alignment with conservative values, focusing on priorities that resonate with the district’s electorate. "Congressman Adrian Smith is a proven and trusted conservative," stated Smith’s campaign spokesman Chris Peterson.

As populism gains traction in U.S. politics, Cohen asserts that constituents of the 3rd District seek a candidacy that speaks to their desires for moderation and pragmatism rather than extremes.
